The Rush City/Pine City boys hockey team defeated the Proctor Rails 4-3 in sudden death overtime.
The Rails scored two goals with less than five minutes in the third to
bookend the score at three, which sent the game into sudden death
overtime.
The last-minutes drama set up the game winner for the Dragon’s Haakon
Hanson who found the mesh under the goaltenders right arm to send
his team home with a win.
“The game was exciting from the start. We really had to work for our goals,” head coach Tim Schlichting said.
The first period ended scoreless as Proctor outshot the Dragons 12-4.
“We had problems keeping the puck in their zone. It was almost as if
Proctor knew what forecheck we were running,” Schlichting said.
The Dragons changed their forecheck for the second period and were able
to get two goals, one from Terry Kraft on the power play and one from
Haakon Hansen. The game was physical and ended with the Dragons getting
a 5 on 3 at the end of the second period.
“We were having troubles winning draws and getting the puck into their
zone on the man advantage. The guys kept banging away and shortly after
Adam Olson came up big with our third goal to make it 3 to 1 contest,”
Schlichting said.
With about five minutes left, goaltender James Fregein was ran into and
knocked over along with the net by a member of the Rails.
After being shook up, the Dragons called a time out to regroup, which
gave Fregien a break, which set up the final minutes which resulted in
the sudden death win for the Dragons.
In the end, Schlichting was happy to have the fan support.
“Several fans and former players made the trip there to witness our hard-fought victory,” he said.
