March is National Women’s History Month and the North Chisago Historical Society will again honor local women who have made significant contributions to the community and country.
This will be the Society’s fourth annual “Women in History Hall of Fame” program to be held at the Rushseba Town Hall on Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m.
Honored in this year’s National Women’s History month will be Charlotte Brooker of North Branch who will tell her own life’s story and the Anderson sisters, Alida and Amanda of Rush City as portrayed by their grand-nieces, Ilene Olson and Beverly Anderson.
Charlotte Brooker
Charlotte is a graduate of North Branch High School and a U of M graduate who taught at Anoka Hennepin and White Bear Lake for 20 years and was also a member of the original Minnesota Environmental Board for 15 years and holds a graduate degree in environmental education at the U of M.
Charlotte was also a member and leader of the Izaak Walton League of America where she ultimately chaired the National Executive Board for three years being the first woman in the 70 year history of the League to hold this position. DNR and in 2006 received the Sigrud Olson Conservation Award from the Minn. I.W.L.A. (Izaak Walton League).
The Anderson Sisters – Alida and Amanda
The second presenters will be Ilene Anderson Olson and Beverly Anderson who will bring us the history of the Anderson sisters who owned and operated the Anderson Sisters Millinery in Rush City at the turn of the century. The Anderson sisters, Alida and Amanda Anderson, were great-aunts of Ilene and Beverly, and owned and operated the first business in Rush City run by women. Alida and Amanda were both born in Sweden and immigrated to Minnesota with their parents, the Peter Andersons, in the 1870s and were among the founders of the First Lutheran Church in Rush City.
Some of the historical society members will wear and model hats. On display will be hats, pictures, flowers and feathers and other accruements needed and used in a millinery shop.
Please join them for this interesting and fun program. After the meeting and program, light refreshments will be served.
The Rushseba Town Hall is located about 3/4 mile north of the Grant House in Rush City on County Road 30 (Forest Blvd.). The public is welcome.
