The Rush City girls basketball team narrowly escaped defeat with a two-point win over Isle Jan. 7.
In
what may have gone down as one of the closest games of the year,
Brittany Scheffer was fouled with two seconds remaining in the game,
and sunk both free throws to give the Tigers a 45-43 win.
"It was a very exciting game," head coach Mark Henrich said.
Prior
to the game winning free throws by Scheffer, the girls called a time
out and had a set play for Chenoa Fields to get an outside shot or for
Scheffer to get a shot in the middle of the zone.
After some quick ball movement, Amy Carlson found Scheffer open near the basket who was quickly fouled. The rest is history.
On Scheffer's performance, Henrich said she had a "monster game."
Isle had an opportunity with two seconds left, but bricked one off the backboard to end the game.
Scheffer finished the game with 10 points.
"I
am very proud of the entire team for being able to hold the lead for
the entire game and keeping their composure when Isle tied the game at
the end," Henrich said.
Barnum
With the high of
the win still in their system, the girls were quickly rocked back to
reality with a 66-23 loss to Barnum on Jan. 10.
The girls
offense was stunted by a robust Barnum defense that applied full-court
and half-court pressure throughout the contest.
Fields paced the team with nine points. Scheffer led the team with six rebounds.
"Barnum
lived up to their ranking and record. They pressured us full and half,
their quickness was a bit to much for us. The girls did not give up and
worked hard to compete with a strong team," Henrich said.
