Harold Herman Swanson was born in Saint Paul, MN on December 5, 1923.
Hal, as he was called, was the only child of Herman and Ethel Swanson. At an early age he moved to North Branch, MN where he graduated from high school. He attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York and was a career military man. Hal served in the Korean War and was awarded a purple heart among other honors for his heroic war efforts.
He married Clarice Peterson on November 13, 1951 in Long Beach, CA. Their son Eric was born in Jacksonville, NC in October of 1955. Hal was a member of Incarnation Lutheran Church, Navy League of the U.S., The Military Officer’s Association, Lions Club, Kings Point Alumni Association and the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation.
Harold passed away March 10, 2008 and is survived by granddaughter, Tammy (John) Barbie; grandson, Rob Swanson; great granddaughter, Sophia Barbie; daughter-in-law, Rae Swanson and other loving relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clarice, and son, Eric.
Hal enjoyed playing piano, reading, military history, airplanes and genealogy. He will be remembered for his military service, interesting stories and love of family.
Memorial service was Friday, March 14, 11 a.m. at Incarnation Lutheran Church in Shoreview. Rev. Jim Hougen, officiant. Inurnment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
