Swanson: Wearing thin PDF Print

By MaryHelen Swanson

I really hate to say this, but in my opinion, both the winter and the presidential campaign are wearing thin. I wonder about a bid for the oval office that spans two years. If it takes two years of beating the road to win this election, what kind of president will any of the candidates make? Will they take as long each time they want to get re-elected? If so, who will be running the store?

As for the winter, my bone to pick is with this mythical lady called Mother Nature. Perhaps “lady” isn’t the right word. Why are we subject to such a long period of dormancy? I think we’ve had enough, but then, that’s one of those things over which I have no control. It just pains me to watch the golf tournaments from Florida where they complain about a breezy day and there is green grass all around and people in shirt sleeves. We’re probably looking down the road a month or so before we have anything that resembles that here.

Our online poll tells us that people in East Central Minnesota would rather sleep away their cabin fever, I guess their hoping to dream about our brief, but beautiful days of spring and summer. A few are making plans for when they can get out and get their feet into the good soil of our Minnesota landscape. That is, for when we can once again see that landscape. A few are planning vacations, some have abandoned ship for better days in the south and a few are drooling over 50-inch muskies and four-pound walleyes during Saturday afternoon fishing shows on television. Haven’t participated in our online poll? Try it, you’ll like it, as they used to say,  it’s lots of fun. Head to www.ecmpostreview.com.

Now we’ve got Easter too early and winter too late. April will be pretty empty without the celebration, but welcome. I suggest cleaning out those closets for the May 3 and May 10 citywide garage sales (NB and RC respectively). That’ll take up a few dull days.

And it’s time to start those garden seeds, just be sure you find a good sunny window or better yet, as the Master Gardeners said last week, get a grow light.

Another thing that’s wearing thin is the fashionable admitting of illicit activities by political leaders. OK, OK, so no one is perfect, but really folks, how do we raise a moral America when daily we are bombarded with news of another and yet another government leader’s shame. It is pitiful to see them hanging their heads publicly asking for understanding?

Perhaps aspiring politicians should think ahead more carefully when the temptations of indiscretion flail their arms in front of them. People, there is really nothing that can be hidden these days. The skeletons just don’t stay in the closet anymore, as if they ever did.

Let’s see, what else is wearing thin?  The end of the shovel, the blanket in the dog house, the rim of the bird feeder, the winter boots, and having to put on that heavy winter coat one more day.

Can you tell that I’ve had enough of winter?

I will however, find comfort and joy this Friday as I join my family for our traditional Good Friday outing that includes first the morning church service at Faith Lutheran Church in St. Paul, the visit to the family gravesite at Elmhurst Cemetery, lunch at House of Wong on Larpenter, and that heavenly tour of the Como Park Conservatory. It can snow, blow and bluster all it wants, but inside that warm glass dome it’s spring - aaaah!

The beauty of that gorgeous botanical display and the beauty of a family tradition that goes back more than 30 years will never wear thin. Isn’t that a wonderful thing?

Enjoy your Easter.
