Scouts spend the night underground PDF Print

cave1.jpgBoy Scouts like to get outside and camp all year long, but those in-between seasons can be tricky. It is wet, muddy, cold and snowy in the late winter and early spring which is tough going even for the more experienced Boy Scouts. So, Troop 411 of North Branch headed south searching for an interesting “between seasons” camp-out a couple of weeks ago. They found Eagle Cave south of La Crosse, Wisconsin.

In the foreground are Don Mattson, John Roerig, Ian Maki, Matt Reyer (background) Scoutmaster Todd Maki, Kevin Roerig and Zach Mattson.

“We got to set up camp and sleep inside the cave” said Senior Patrol Leader Zach Mattson. “It was a lot different than any other camping I’ve done before but it was really fun.”

“Exploring the cave was the best part for me.” said Second Class Scout Corey Beam. The boys were encouraged to bring and wear old clothes, elbow pads, bike helmets and flash lights with good batteries so they could explore the underground terrain. After exploring, they spent the night inside the cave with more than 250 other guests from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois.

The Scouts would like to thank their drivers for providing safe transportation for the weekend: Mark Reyer, Don Mattson and Todd Maki.
