To the editor:
The IRS needs special help this year from the public.
Starting in May, economic stimulus payments of up to $600 for individuals ($1,200 for married couples) will be issued by the IRS. Filers also get $300 for each eligible child.
To get a payment, people must file a 2007 tax return. That’s it.
But here’s where Uncle Sam needs a hand. Millions of people are eligible but may not know it. These are certain retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers who normally don’t file a tax return. Some may not have touched a tax form in years. But, they must file a 2007 tax return or they’ll miss out on getting their stimulus payment.
Please help spread the word to friends, family, neighbors and community organizations.
People who have at least $3,000 from wages or certain benefits from Social Security, Railroad Retirement and Veterans Affairs may be eligible, but they need to file a return. We’ll do the rest.
Visit www.irs.gov for details and the 1040A-3 package that these filers can use to qualify for the stimulus payment, or call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-1040.
