RC golf battling through Mother Nature PDF Print

One might say the winner in the early going of the Rush City golf team’s season has been the weather. Shortened rounds, and windy, wet conditions have been as much a battle as the competition.

Girls’ rounds were shortened to nine holes due to weather at the Pine City Scramble on April 21, but the Tigers still manages an overall third place and team one: Ashley Strenke, Jami Friday, and Emily Hutcheson, medaled on the day with a 44 score.

The boys’ Scramble was held on April 17, and team one: Tucker Nowak, Thoren Fletcher, and Garrett Churchsmith, tallied a 76 for 18 holes.

The Tigers had their first official meet on April 18 at Bulrush in Rush City, and again it was a bold windy day. Both the boys and the girls finished behind first place Pine City, which tallied 170 from the boys and 231 from the girls.

The Rush City girls finished with a total of 244, 24 points in front of third place Hinckley-Finlayson (HF). Strenke finished the day with a team-leading 52, followed by Friday at 61, and Jocelyn Dahl with 63.

The boys finished with a 204, tied with HF. Notables scores include Nowak’s 46, Fletcher’s 50, and a 54 from both Zach Launderville, and Trevor Oscarson.

On April 22, it was on to a wet Cuyuna Country Club in Aitkin, where the boys fell by 9 points to Aitkin’s 207, but the girls scored a win, defeating Aitkin 243 to 252.

A highlight for the boys was Churchsmith, who matched Nowak with a 52 in his first official varsity meet. Also golfing well, Fletcher scored a 55.

The girls were led by Strenke, Friday, and Hutcheson, who scored 54, 56, and 64 respectively. Strenke and Friday, both freshman, and sophomore Hutcheson are providing punch from the under class.

Back home at Bulrush on April 29, the girls continued to shine with a 219 to 221 squeaker over Isle (Braham did not finish). Coach Jeremy Albright was impressed. “Thoren Fletcher, Jami Friday, Emily Hutcheson, Samantha Skogman and Brittney Hein all had their best rounds of the year so far,” he said.

How good? For the girls, Friday scored a 50, Hutcheson a 52, Skogman a 63, and Hein a 70.

Fletcher led the boys with a 44, but it was not enough to vault the team over Braham, which won with a score of 190. Rush City finished in third, behind Isle, with a 205 score.

Aside from Fletcher, Nowak scored a 47, Launderville a 54, and Churchsmith a 60.

Following the Bulrush meet, the boys and girls were on divergent paths in the conference, with the boys at 1-4 and the girls at 4-1.
