The St. Francis Triangular on April 29 wasn’t that kind to the North Branch track team, but athletes from both the boys and girls team put in some stellar performances.
The girls 4x800 relay team: Briana Berthiaume, Kendra Norman, Shayna Gray, and Miranda Charley, broke the school record with a first place time of 18:58.72.
Onalee Yousey also catapulted herself into the annals of school history with a first place time of 16.89 in the 100m hurdles, good enough to crack the top five performances by a North Branch athlete in that event.
While he didn’t break any records, Brian Grand had what coach Brian Hasleiet called his “best races” in the 110m high hurdles and 300m hurdles. “As a sophomore, he’s running some very good times,” said Hasleiet. Unfortunately for Grand, both performances were only enough to secure second place finishes in both events. He also finished second in the long jump, at a distance of 19-feet, three inches.
Other stellar performances for the boys team, which scored 49 points - second to Fridley’s 90 - include the performance of the relay teams, which won the 4x800m and the 4x200m; TJ Leason who won the high jump with a height of 5-feet, eight inches, and John Morrison, who won the shot put with a distance of 44-feet, seven inches. Morrison also finished second in discus.
Jared Grams took second place finishes in the 100m dash (11.46) and the 200m dash (24.09).
For the girls, Yousey wasn’t the only athlete finishing in the money. Catie Bettendorf took a first place finish in the 300m hurdles with a time of 49.41, and was second only to Yousey in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.26.
Ali and Megan Zimmerman finished one and two in the 3200m run, scoring 13:14 and 13:39 respectively, and there was a host of second place finishes, including Sara Swanson - 100m dash, Haley Hasleiet - 1600m run, Kristen Robatcek and Karisa Richard - tied with four-feet, eight inches in the high jump, and Sadie Kolke in the 800m and the triple jump.
The 4x400m relay team of Kolke, Shayna Gray, Charley and Swanson had a strong showing as well, with a first place time of 4:14.4.
