RC softball starts slow, but comes on strong in April PDF Print
The Rush City softball team started last week 0-2, but managed to get one back against the Pine City Dragons late in the week that would serve as payback for an earlier, tough loss.

Tuesday, April 29 saw Rush City at Pine City for the first time. It would leave a mark on the Tigers they would hope to remove later in the week.

Rush City pounded out 10 hits and drew six walks against the Dragons, but sloppy defense proved a downfall and they lost a close one, 7-6.

Eighth grader Trista Sarago, junior Shelbi Logue,  and seniors Brittany Scheffer and Amy Carlson had two hits for the Tigers.  Chelsea Peterson and Tomi Schellbach each had one hit.  Logue scored two runs while Sarago, Scheffer, Carlson, and Schellbach each crossed the plate once.

“Offensively we looked good. We were down 5-0 in the top of the sixth and came back to score five runs in that inning to tie the game. We had four dropped balls that should have been caught, so that is something we will work to correct before we meet Pine City on Thursday. If we play better defense, we win the game,” said coach Kim Erdman.

Jade Kristofferson pitched a complete game, striking out three batters.

Aitkin came to town the following day and left with a 3-0 win.

“Aitkin played good defense and their pitcher hit the corners, keeping us off balance. We hit the ball, but need to work on hitting with more power, as many of our hits were grounders to the infield,” said Erdman

Jade Kristofferson pitched a complete game 3 hitter but Aitkin capitalized on a few Tiger miscues to come up with the win.

Freshman Lindsey Kuhlman ended up with the Tigers only hit of the game.

Pine City came to town two days after they beat the Tigers by one run. But, on their home field and with the memory of the one-run loss still fresh, the Tigers rose to the occasion, and this time the Dragons left with a 9-5 loss.

“We knew if we played better defense we could come away with a win and that is what we did. Seventh-grader Abby Scherer made some very nice catches in left. Brittany Scheffer also made a great catch of a line drive at first,” said Erdman.

Scoring two runs each for the Tigers were Chelsea Peterson, Brittany Scheffer, Tomi Schellbach and Lindsey Kuhlman. Kristofferson crossed the plate once, and from the mound played a complete game, striking out four batters and allowing no walks.
