Clean-up day was smashing hit, RC council agrees PDF Print
By Patrick Tepoorten

The Rush City Council remarked on Monday night that clean-up day was a smashing success. But it also expressed a desire to see it organized and run by a local, or series of local, civic organizations, thus removing the responsibility from city staff, which Mayor Ertz called costly.

Ertz noted that the event was actually started by a local chapter of the Jaycees, but along the line it fell in the city’s lap to organize. “It costs the city time and money; we need to get it back in the hands of civic organizations,” he said.

The council agreed generally, but expressed skepticism the city could find a group willing to take it over. “That will be a challenge,” said Councilor Nancy Schroeder.

The issue will be brought before the Economic Development Authority committee in hopes committee members will take the responsibility of going to civic groups and encouraging them to be more involved.

In other news:

• CJP Corp., which had requested to lease one of its structures on the industrial park to an auto/truck repair facility, was granted a text amendment and conditional use permit toward that end.

• The vacation of Avenue C for Olson Funeral Chapel’s planned expansion, which had been approved pending legal review, was again stalled pending a survey of the affected lots by Olson. The city wants to insure that no parcel will become landlocked as a result of the vacation.

• Examples of possible Web site designs were looked at and the field of options narrowed. Once the city Web site is functional, the city plans to hold a logo contest to replace the current one, which dates back to the early 1980s.

• Plastech Corp. was granted approval to move forward in seeking industrial revenue bonds in the amount of $6 million for a planned 30,000 square foot expansion. A public hearing on the matter will be held June 9.

• A bid from BDM Consulting in the amount not to exceed $1,500 was accepted for a wetland delineation of 100 acres of industrial land in the city.

• The May 26 council meeting, which falls on Memorial Day, was changed to May 28.

• Lara Smetana, Pine City liquor store manager, spoke during public comment and noted the success of the Chamber of Commerce’s recent wine tasting. She also encouraged the board to have its municipal liquor enterprise be more involved in future wine tastings.
