Upcoming events will close streets in Rush City PDF Print
By Patrick Tepoorten

For Rush City residents who live near the city park along S. Dana Ave., there are a couple of road closures in your near future.

At its regular meeting on June 9, the Rush City Council approved the closure of S. Dana Ave., from 4th Street to 2nd Street, and 3rd Street from S. Eliot Ave., to S. Dana Ave. on July 17, starting at 7 p.m., for a Rush City Chamber of Commerce event.

The event is a free concert featuring Bon and the Beachcombers.

There will also be a closure in the shape of a “loop” on Sept. 9 for a Paradise Pride sporting event. The closure will commence at the corner of 4th Street and S. Dana Ave., proceed north to W. 1st Street, go west along 1st to Field Ave., turn south to 4th Street, and go east from 4th Street back to S. Dana Ave.

Paradise Pride, a local Rush City non-profit organization, will be holding a “Forward-a-thon” for special athletes, and the loop will be closed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on that day. There will be a barbecue starting at noon.

In other news:

• It was reported earlier this month that the council had approved the purchase of a new jetter for public works, contingent on Public Works Director Ray Benolken’s satisfaction with the used piece of gear. He wasn’t.

“It didn’t work like they said,” he informed the council.

Since last meeting Benolken has found another jetter, one that meets the city’s needs and was given approval to proceed with the purchase. The replacement is expected to cost $15,000 with trade-in, less than $3,000 more than the originally sought machine.

• The meeting schedule was adjusted to accommodate councilors with summer conflicts. The second meeting in June will take place on Tuesday, June 24, at 7 p.m. July meetings will be on the 15th and the 29th, both at 6:30 p.m.

• A public hearing was scheduled for July 15. The city plans to change the zoning ordinance to allow for the creation of escrow accounts for individuals seeking a host of land use permits, such as variances, and conditional use permits, fence permits, etc. It was also mentioned that fees for permits could be reviewed at the hearing.

The council agreed the creation of escrow accounts was necessary to make sure city engineering or legal fees are covered, at least partially, before funds are spent.

• A federal grant in the amount of $27,426 was received, for purposes of completing Phase II of the Rush City Regional Airport’s environmental assessment toward the proposed crosswind runway and south building area. The Rush City Joint Airport Zoning Board will hold a public hearing on June 19, 7 p.m., in the high school library, to consider the adoption of an unrelated zoning amendment.

• It was announced that the Fly-in/Drive-in on June 15 is expecting some interesting “war birds,” including a B-25 bomber, some Russian Yaks and American T-6s, a P-38 Lightning, a Stinson Tri-motor. As well, some military helicopters are expected.
