A Bigfoot expedition in Lent Township turns dangerous PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 14 January 2009

By Aaron Vehling

Minneapolis-based Bigfoot researcher Ed Welch is still tracking the elusive beast thanks to the lifesaving ingenuity of some Chisago County Sheriff’s deputies.

bigfoot.jpg
On the afternoon of Dec. 26 near County Road 19 and Falcon Avenue in Lent Township, Welch was videotaping what he said was clear evidence of Bigfoot in the Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area (WMA) when he became a victim of the area’s plentiful swamps and marshlands.

Ed Welch believes he captured  evidence of a Bigfoot-type creature in Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area. Photo supplied

As his camera captured peculiarly shaped tree branches and sticks fashioned into teepee shapes (allegedly typical markings of Bigfoot), the ice below him broke and in moments Welch was waste deep in bitter cold water.

“Out of instinct, I threw the camera on the snowbank to save it,” he said. As for the creek, Welch said, “I thought the ice would be solid.”

Welch managed to emerge from the creek, but not unscathed. He was developing symptoms of hypothermia, he said, and was having trouble walking. To make matters worse, he was wandering aimlessly for hours throughout Carlos Avery, often going in circles. Then fear and panic set in.

“It was really scary to be lost and sick,” he said. Video of the incident shows a distressed, anxious Welch working endlessly to stave off the freeze.

Welch, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and Army, was confident enough in his abilities to manage the wilderness, but this time he said he knew he had to call 911.

Initially, the sheriff’s deputies could not find Welch nor  he them. But Welch mentioned to police dispatch that when Deputy Bruce Brandenburg had his siren on initially, Welch could hear it.

Brandenburg re-activated the siren and set forth to navigate the labyrinthine wooded marshes in search of Welch, according to the police report.  Brandenburg decided to follow the creek just north of the woods to see if he could find the point into where Welch fell.

Then Brandenburg zig-zagged back toward his car, meanwhile radioing a fellow deputy to change the tone of his squad car’s siren to one that would carry better throughout the woods. He hoped that he would run into Welch as both men were heading toward the sound of the siren.

Brandenburg wrote in the police report that as he was walking about one-third to one-half-mile into the woods yelling Welch’s name, he encountered a distressed, limping man who was carrying a tripod.

Welch was in adequate shape to walk back to Brandenburg’s car and get into the idling ambulance. At first, Welch declined transport to the hospital, but then agreed after contemplating the effects of hypothermia on the body, according to the police report.

“They did a good job of finding me,” Welch said of the deputies involved in the search. “I was so far back in there.”

Bigfoot in Chisago County
That Friday afternoon may not have transpired the way he wanted, but Welch did stumble onto what he says is conclusive evidence of Bigfoot in Carlos Avery.

A retiree, Welch has been conducting field research for two years. He has visited the Chisago County area sporadically since October.

From his Dec. 26 excursion, he has photos of facialesque formations and footprints and also YouTube videos of unidentified creatures scurrying about the woods. He showed the Post Review a photo of the neatly organized, stick-based teepee structures that he says are also common at Bigfoot sites around the world.

The video shows a black creature running behind some trees. Welch admits that there are black bears near Stacy, but insists that his video shows no bears. For one thing, the beast is running upright, like a human “on its hind legs,” Welch said.

Dan Rhode, the manager of Carlos Avery, has worked there for 34 years. He said he has never seen anything that would lead him to believe Bigfoot lives in his park.

Rhode said that earlier last week he encountered a bunch of footprints caused by someone wearing aluminum snowshoes, which are smaller than the wooden variety.

“I have no reason to believe the tracks are from anything other than people or bears,” he said. But for Welch, the experience was real, as were the emotions it evoked.

A knack for Yeti
Welch credits a Bigfoot encounter at Medical Lake in Washington State in the 1970s with sparking his interest in the field. Time is also on his side these days.

“I am retired,” he said, “and so I have all the time in the world (to do research).”

While camping at age 16 at Medical Lake, he heard a vicious, demonic sound from the valley below.

“I woke up to the most horrifying sound,” he said, “like a howling scream.”

He heard the sound again in a recording on the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization Web site.

“I’ll never forget that scream,” he said.

Welch targets underdeveloped areas, such as dense woods and thick brush, and always tries to stick with remote areas.

“People say I am a ‘get your hands dirty’ kind of researcher,” he said.

It was this spirit that led him to tackle the tougher parts of Carlos Avery.

Welch has learned from his harrowing experience. He reminds aspiring Bigfoot researchers that there is strength in numbers. Keeping a friend at your side can prevent you from getting injured and lost.

“I never want to go through that again,” he said. “You should never go into the wilderness alone.”

Rhode has his own tips for those audacious enough to brave Carlos Avery in the winter.

“Never trust the ice out here in the swamps,” he said. Most of the soil is peat, which Rhode said creates heat when it decomposes.

“The water may not freeze even in the coldest winters,” he said.

So prospective Bigfoot researchers should beware the quagmires they may encounter in the various environs, always conduct research in groups, and make sure to have a camera on-hand. The last one may be most important, Welch said.

“Bigfoot always seems to be elusive,” he said, “but you should always be willing to collect data.”

Why would Bigfoot reside in Carlos Avery when Chisago County does not allow such exotic animals?

Its a shame to see such small minded responses to a legitimate study of Crypto Zoology. This phenomenon has been documented all around the world, even before Columbus discovered America. These negative responses only represent a small majority of the population. Its really not important if people believe me or not, Iv seen one. They do exist and I will continue to study and document the evidence.

Why would a scientific researcher mistakenly assume belief or lack there of from nothing more than a sarcastic comment about Chisago County exotic animal ordinances?

Good job. It will take a lot of people who have the guts to go out and look for this creature to solve the mystery about it. It is either out there or not, but we will never know by listening to bloggers and other people's opinions. We will only find out by going into the bush and looking for it.
Thanks for all your efforts and keep tying!

Thanks(JavaBob,Dan Geer). Its great to know that there are people that are in touch with the world around them. Most peoples life consist of just existing at home in front of the TV or Computer. Making statements without fact and opinions that have no basis. I never really care about the negative comments or opinions. Opinions are self expressions from individuals giving them and not the answers.

Ed,

keep up the good work. I do admire your efforts and ambition. There are over 400 years of documents relating to a large biped non human ape in North America. I am sure there are many hoaxes but all of these sightings can't all be hoaxes.

The absence of physical evidence means the absence of existence to the shallow minded. It is only a matter of time before another good video or a body will be found.

Ignore the comments of the narrow minded.

1847 is when the first gorillas were discovered. lowland gorillas where not found until 1901. so why can't there be another species out there. There are an awful lot of credible people who see these creatures who don't exsist. These creatures were even on ancient pottery of Native Americans. They probably thought the same thing about the breeds they have in captivaty now. I hope that never happens to the " bigfoot breed" Roosevelt even wrote about them in his book. Keep up the good work Ed. Remember when they thought the world was flat. This isn't a magical fair it is a whole population of very smart primates. I'll bet the nonbelievers won't have a problem going to the zoo, if they ever put one there. I hope not.

I know all about most people thinking something is impossible when it is in fact actually possible.

Based on my own TA I recognized that the stock markets were on dangerous ground in 2008 and sold all my equity investments before the crash. At the time anyone I told about it discounted my opinion out of hand as being impossible.

Now who's laughting?

Keep up the good work out there in the woods. If you find them ...keep it a secret or they will end up dead, or worse...in a zoo.

ive heard them scream and grunt and i saw 1 shapeshift outof and back in to a tree.I would be a non believer had I not heard and seen what i saw. BUT I would not doubt they exist. I heard the screams in Hoopa,CA. Humboldt Co. in 2004. 2003 I heard about 10 grunts very loud powerful grunts in Elk River near Eureka, CA. The sceams came from at least 5 or 6 different Bigfeet at night miles apart 1 after another.

Wild animals can be living practically on your doorstep for years before you see one. There are an estimated 350 to 500 mountain lions (cougars) living, out of place, on the prairie of Southern Saskatchewan, where I live. Sightings are rare. I have seen a track, and heard a cougar at night, but have not visually identified one. A smarter life form, such as a Sasquatch could just as easily evade visual detection.

I beleive that bigfoot do exist. I live in Washington state which have several sightings. Several around where I live. My Uncle was Roger Patterson. I think the reason we do not find a body is that they bury there dead. I am always looking when I am in the woods, you never know where or when you will see one.

well i do not know if bigfoot is real or not but i do believe it could be, i saw a mountain lion here in michigan a good 10 years before the dnr was able to confirm there presence here so i see no reason these creatures could not remain hidden in very remote areas

Dear Ed,
I am a firm believer of creation, and the Bible.
Ask these- I have something Really Smart to say critics if they believe in God. I'll bet most don't. They only believe in the sound of their own voice, no matter how ridiculous they sound. I do hope your not one of these.
Looking in Genesis, God speaks of the giants. Oneof these was Goliath, who David killed with his sling and a stone. Now it does kindof mention the size of these beings, who were made by the fallen angels and human women. And they were about the same size s bigfoot. And God also says, that there were these giants, even After the flood. We don't know what they actually looked like. But they could have been the bigfoot beginning. At least, this is my belief. These giants were also suppose to be a lot smarter than man. Which would account on how well they can be avoided, and hide. As big as they are, and strong, why do they always run from us. Even children? They have to have a language of their own. But I believe they can fully understand us when we speak.
Now God told man to kill every one of these beings way back then. So, maybe they still believe that it is still our mission to do so. Who knows? Them and the Lord I would imagine. But give these thoughts, and ideas some thought. If there's any truth to it, it might lead us in a better direction how better to approach these creatures. I would love to see one myself. I know there out there. How can us smarter ones not, with all the footprint evidence we find, where no one has been!

Best of luck In Your Search,
Faithbeliever

Keep up the good search Ed....I know they exist because I have seen one for around 15 seconds in broad daylight....BFencounters.com Niagara County NY 2002. There is noone who has ever seen a sasquatch going to deny the creature exists after a sighting as it is that unique in its appearance and movement, size and I will continue to search as long as I can for something I have seen as I know they exist.

I never even thought of something like bigfoot until i met up with him. You see him and i promise you wont ever forget it. My grandfather who was Choctaw told me before he passed away that his people called it "red devil". He always cautioned me to leave it alone, and stay away from it.

ed, keep up the good work.im glad your ok after your slip up. i enjoy watching your videos on you tube and i think for the average person , they arent going to believe it till they have an encounter. i know they exist from personal experience. once it happens you dont forget and you are never the same.in fact there are all kinds of unknown beings and animals out there.if you lucky and open you get to catch a glimpse now and then. remember minds are like parachutes-they function best when open. i am grateful for people like you who take the time on a regular basis to go out and document your work. i really do appreciate all you efforts. i have seen the sasquatches on your you tube videos and think you are one of most consistant researchers in the field today.remember its hard to soar like an eagle when your surrounded by turkeys!! namaste, peace,,love ,light and healing to all.

First off I will start by saying that I live near Medical Lake Wash. And I have never heard of any reported sightings in this area, however they have had cougars move through the area, and as an avid hunter myself if you have ever heard a scream from these big cats they will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Now I am not claiming that BF exists or not because the fact of the matter is that I don't know.I am 53 years of age now and back when I was in my early 20's two friends and myself were hunting up in Pend Oreille county when we came upon some tracks that I really can't explain. They were made by a biped that is for certain. And I tried to look for every explanation I could come up with at the time. There was no track derteriation and then I thought maybe someone had set up a hoax but that didn't make sense either because of the time of year weather conditions and location of the tracks.Someone would have went through alot of trouble setting up a hoax just by chance that someone would stumble upon them before the tracks had a chance to deteriate. There were evidence of snapped limbs and one pretty good size tree even though young snapped in half.Because the forest floor was covered with foilage we only had 4 tracks that were clearly disernible. But I also am a believer in creation and I have a problem with this creatures existance. Now the Neph'ilim who referred to as giants of the land were still called MEN of extraordinary size (Numbers 13:32,33)even though they were offspring from fallen angels they were still referred to as men. And at the flood God obviously had all the animals come to Noah for survival. So unless there was branching off of the primates there is no indication that BF exists. So how did he arrive?....And I still can't explain the tracks that we saw that day. Thanks D.R.
