accident1.jpgAccording to North Branch Police Department Sergeant Rick Sapp, the victim's vehicle was coming off the ramp from southbound I-35 and failed to stop for a red light, hitting a westbound semi trailer in front of the rear tires. The impact sent the victim's car into the ditch. Sapp relayed that the victim received minor injuries. He said she was lucky to be driving a larger vehicle.

The North Memorial helicoptor had been called and did arrive but was not needed. The victim, Sapp said, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital. Photos by MaryHelen Swanson

I was one of the people who saw this firsthand and dialed 911, I was in a vehicle heading east thru the intersection at the same time the semi was going tru and saw the whole thing. It was very scary and I really hope the driver is alright.

This accident was very frustrating for me. About 20 miles north of the accident scene, I came across this women who was completely out of control. I called 911 and talked to the State Trooper dispatcher because she was traveling at a high rate of speed and going from shoulder to shoulder. I thought at any moment she is going to kill herself or someone else. The dispatcher told me "we will try to pull her over", but 20 miles later she was still on the road. She was definitely impaired in some way, shape, or form because she was completely unaware of anyone around her. I am happy to hear no one was killed but I think it definitely could have been prevented, if they would've responded to the 911 call.

Why?: ...
When a person suffers from a sudden medical issue while driving, especially diabetes related, they can become unaware of their surroundings. Given such a situation, why would one think an affected driver would be any more likely to recognize and respond to a State Trooper attempting to pull them over?

Seeing an out of control vehicle on the road, what would be your initial response to attempt to get the vehicle to stop? I believe the State Troopers are trained to handle such a situation. I didn't read anything in the article about a medical condition, especially diabetes. Do you know something the rest of us don't? Do you think you shouldn't report the vehicle and just read in the paper the next day, how many people were injured in an accident, you could have tried to prevent?
