Fire destroys Fish Lake Township home PDF Print E-mail

A home in Fish Lake Township was severely damaged in a fire that broke out about 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Neighbors who watched firefighters battle the blaze burning though the upper and lower levels of Mike Buckles’ home at 1280 Stark Road said he had lived in the home about six years and had been working during that time to renovate it.

Buckles reportedly was in the home at the time the fire ignited but was able to get out safely. One of his two dogs died in the blaze.

An attempt was made to contact Buckles for this story, but he said he did not want to talk at this time.

North Branch Fire Chief John McFarling said firefighters were on the scene within five minutes of the dispatch call, but flames already had engulfed the structure.

Firefighters battled the blaze from the ground and from above, on the roof, cutting vent holes into the home’s vaulted ceiling.

Cambridge Fire Chief Donny Ziebarth, whose department assisted in the fire, said it was after 11 p.m. before his firefighters left the scene.

“It was a stubborn fire,” Ziebarth said.

McFarling said North Branch firefighters remained on the scene until about 1:30 a.m., making sure all hot spots were extinguished.

“It’s an old farmhouse with lots of nooks and crannies,” where the flames can hide.

McFarling said it appears the fire originated in the basement, but the cause still is being investigated. He estimated that 80 percent of the structure is a total loss.

McFarling said the state fire marshal was at the scene Tuesday to determine the fire’s cause.

Rush City and Harris fire departments also responded Monday to assist in the blaze.
