Bomb threat text message on calculator at NBAHS said to be a hoax PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 18 December 2009

By MaryHelen Swanson
It was just a joke. That was apparently the intent of an individual at the North Branch High School who texted a bomb threat to a classroom calculator Tuesday, Dec. 15.

The message was read aloud by another student.

It indicated that the threat would be carried out today, Friday, Dec. 18.

By Thursday afternoon the identity of the individual was learned and High School Principal Brad Windschill and the North Branch Police Department School School Resource Officer had talked with the student who confessed that it was just a joke.

According to communications director Patrick Tepoorten, the school district believes that students and staff were never in any danger and school was scheduled to proceed as normal today. The situation was taken seriously, however, Tepoorten said.

The North Branch Police Department issued a notice this morning that, after conferring with the Chisago County Attorney’s Office, it was determined that the responsible student would be charged with disorderly conduct for this incident.

The school district had notified high school parents of the incident via a letter sent home with students Thursday, and through the automated phone message system Thursday night.

It is possible that parents who do not have voice mail and were not home to receive the message may not have gotten the message, said Tepoorten.

None-the-less, the student should have brought home the letter from principal Windschill explaining the situation.

On the phone Friday, Tepoorten said the principal and resource officer have every confidence that there is no threat today.

Why should this student only be charged with Disorderly Conduct. A threat like that is nothing to play with. In these times with all that has happened in our Country and abroad threats like that are taken seriously and should be dealt with accordingly. Not with a slap on the wrist. To let this person get off lightly leaves the door open for more people to think I can do it to. If he had done it on a plane it would be a Federal Crime. There should be more than just one charge along with a public apology to all the parents and students as well as the agencies that had to drop what they were doing and respond to a false bomb threat. A real incident could have happened when they were responding to this false threat. Restitution needs to be made.

I agree Ed! This is why there is so many repeated crimes! Hit them hard the first time! They will learn and so will the others that think it's "a joke."

Dave, yes I pulled plenty of jokes in High School but, nothing that would cause people to react out of fear. What that stundent did could be considered an act of terrorism. So next time you speak you should try and think what it was like for the teachers of the school who had to move the students calmly outside or the parents who didn't like what you call a joke. We had three bomb threats when I was in High School. That was a different time. Now it has to be taken more seriously because of school shootings and real bombs in schools. Forward Deployed so you can have your views.
