Rush City boys basketball meets the Braham Bombers in the Section 7AA championship game tonight, Friday, March 19, at 7 p.m at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

The North Branch school board, on a 3-2 vote Thursday, March 18, approved the recommendations for the 2010-2011 school year budget that includes moving to a four-day week calendar, closing Main Street School, using OPEB trust fund dollars, some fee increases, staff reductions and use of some one-time resources in order to address the $1.3 million deficit. Voting for the recommendations were board members Kirby Ekstrom, John White, and Kim Salo, against were members Jeanne Walz and Vicki McDougall. A complete story will be published next week.

The North Branch school board, Thursday night, March 18, selected
Robert Jutz to fill the position left vacant by the resignation of
Donna Setter.

Thursday morning, March 18, North Branch Area Middle School staff and
students gathered for an exciting assembly. The school was being
honored with a Spotlight Award from the Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation. This is the second time the middle school has earned this award, the other was in 2007.

 No injuries were reported in a two-vehicle, property damage crash that
caused a semitrailer to roll onto its side in a sloped ditch near a
residence off Hwy. 95, west of North Branch, in Isanti County.

After hours of public comment last night, March 17, the Chisago County commissioners reversed their vote on the LS Power Development Agreement.

The Rush City boys basketball team defeated Virginia 61-51 in the Section 7AA Semifinal on Wednesday, March 17. The #2 seeded Tigers (22-3 overall record) will now face Great River Conference rivals #1 seed Braham Bombers (26-3 overall record) in the Section 7AA Championship at 7 p.m. Friday, March 19 at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. The winner will earn a trip to the State High School Tournament. The Rush City boys team split two games (86-70 win, 80-72 loss) with Braham during the regular season.

The unknown and assumptions of the proposed four-day school week appear
to have local parents scratching their heads over how the concept will
impact their child’s education and family schedules. Rush City Schools Superintendent Vern Koepp hosted the second of three
scheduled public meetings on the four-day concept
March 11 at Rush City High
School.

Board has agreed to move forward with levy referendum this fall
The North Branch school board is ever considering ways to address the district’s budget deficit. On Thursday of this week, the board is expected to act on the
budget recommendation that includes a change in weekly schedule from
five days to four, closing the Main Street School and using one-time
funds to balance the budget.

Don Hartzell is Community Service Award recipient
The North Branch Lions are honoring one of their own this year as their 8th Community Service Award recipient. Don Hartzell, a charter member of the club, and its first president in
1973, accepted the award at the Lions’ Governor’s Night dinner
Tuesday, March 9.
